Will Fox Channel Win Blooper Of The Year Award?

Fox Channel Logo

It seems that the Fox channel has lost its mind.  Hiring Sarah Palin for a news contributor?  Sarah Palin in known more for her stupid comments, inaccurate statements, and gaffes than for a news worthy contributor.  What could have possessed those in control of Fox to hire her?  Who decided she has anything news worthy to add?

Factually challenged news channel hires factually challenged Palin

January 11, 2010 2:46 pm ET

The New York Times reported that Fox News has hired Sarah Palin as a contributor who “will appear on the network’s programming on a regular basis as part of a multi-year deal” and “will host an occasional series that will run on the network from time to time.”  Fox News hired Palin despite her months of pushing false claims and bogus information, including the “Lie of the Year” that the Democrats’ health care bill includes “death panels.”

Of all the articles advertising this momentous decision by Fox Execs, this one I couldn’t resist using since it is in line with my views on this topic.  So let’s look at some examples of Sarah Palin’s brilliant commentary, let’s pull up some of her enlightened statements:

The People Don’t Elect U.S. Presidents, God Does

Upon being asked by James Dobson if the McCain ticket’s precipitous slide in the polls gets her down:

… [it] strengthens my faith, because I’m going to know, at the end of the day, putting this in God’s hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4. So I’m not discouraged at all.

… and I can feel it too, Dr. Dobson. I can feel the power of prayer, and that strength that is provided through our prayer warriors across this nation.

Ah yes, the always helpful “prayer warriors,” whose appeals to the Almighty actually count for more than the average American citizen’s vote. Apparently the next president of the United States will be handpicked by God.

God may not have rewarded her with the Vice Presidency but he made sure his favorite village idiot still got a staring spot with Fox!  I’ve seen some strange things laid at the feet of God, but this is out there even for me!   Then again, if God can be used as a cause for unceasing war, torture, and all the other atrocities on this earth instead of life, anything is possible…  For myself I was always under the impression that the Electoral College elected the President and Vice President.

Sarah Palin, Idiot or victim of the news media?

When asked by a 3rd grader what the Vice President did, Palin replied with the following:

Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”

PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.

Do you suppose that those in the Senate would agree to this brilliant statement? I somehow doubt it. Although the Senate can use all the help it can get, (they are dumber than a box of stupid rocks most of the time), saying that the VP is in charge is like saying the sky is green.  And Fox believes Palin has anything news worthy to contribute?  Perhaps they are going for comedy of the year awards?

Then there was Sarah Palin’s proud assertion that the Alaskan legislature had cleared her of all wrongdoings in the “Troopergate Affair.”  Remember she had Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan fired after he tried to fire her former brother-in-law, State Trooper Mike Wooten?  Palin said she was acquitted of all wrong-doing, the legislature  said otherwise.

“Well, I’m very, very pleased to be cleared of any legal wrongdoing … any hint of any kind of unethical activity there,” the governor said from her car on the way to a campaign stop in Philadelphia.

The investigation was ordered by the Legislature in July to examine the circumstances under which Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was terminated. The results of that probe, released Friday, concluded she abused her power in pressing for the firing of an Alaska state trooper once married to her sister but was within her authority in firing Monegan.

Denial does seem to be a favorite of those in public office. She sounds perfect for a commentator position on the Fox News Channel! Maybe we actually have a winning combination here?  Did anyone watch her interview with Katie Couric? A few gems from that interview are:

Couric: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this — to stay informed and to understand the world?

Palin: I’ve read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media —
Couric: But what ones specifically? I’m curious.

Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years.

Couric: Can you name any of them?

Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news.

But she can’t remember a single one?  How about NBC who was interviewing her?  OK then, moving right along…  At a fundraiser in North Carolina Palin had this to say about the news:

At those times on the campaign trail when sometimes it’s easy to get a little bit discouraged, when, you know, when you happen to turn on the news when your campaign staffers will let you turn on the news … Usually they’re like “Oh my gosh, don’t watch. You’re going to, you know, you’re going to get depressed.

Yup, we have brilliance incarnate here for our edification. Palin seems to be the poster child for the dumbing down of America.  And then the classic denial and attack because Palin’s stupidity was undeniable after the interview with Katie Couric:

Sarah Palin Slams Katie Couric as “Badgering,” Biased in New Memoir

Friday – November 13, 2009 – 9:19am

According to the Associated Press, Palin, 45, says McCain campaign aide Nicolle Wallace urged her to sit down with Couric, 52, who is also a working mother. Palin says she was told that Couric liked and admired her. The interview would be a favor to Couric, whom Palin notes had the lowest ratings of the network anchors and whom Wallace said suffered from low self-esteem. Palin writes that she almost began to “feel sorry” for Couric.

But during the interview, Palin said she was surprised to find Couric acting condescending, biased and “badgering.”

Ever notice how it is never the statements the person makes that is to blame for their troubles but the mean old interviewer?  Denial is the stock in trade for a politician. How in the world did Palin manage to get elected Governor in the first place?  What in the world were the citizens of Alaska thinking?  Didn’t anyone pay attention to what Palin had to say?  And now what in the world is Fox thinking even considering her for a position as contributor to their station?

A look at Sarah Palin’s bio on Wikipedia gives some clues as to her backers and how she got where she is today.  Here it is:

Sarah Louise Palin born February 11, 1964) is an American politician, author and political commentator who served as the 11th Governor of Alaska from 2006 until her resignation in 2009. She was the Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States in 2008.

Palin was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska, city council from 1992 to 1996 and the city’s mayor from 1996 to 2002. After an unsuccessful campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Alaska in 2002, she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 until her resignation in 2004. She was elected Governor of Alaska in November 2006. Palin became the first female governor of Alaska and the youngest person ever elected governor of that state.

Oil is money and power all rolled into one.  She obviously has connections with both or someone this inept couldn’t possibly have gotten elected to so many different offices.  And you would think she would have learned how to do interviews, handle speaking engagements, by the time she was asked to run as the  VP candidate under the McCain banner.  Someone screwed up.

But the question remains; What is Fox thinking in hiring Sarah Palin?  Are they going for comedy relief?  Do they believe that Sarah Palin is capable of intelligent additions to their news program?  Are their ratings slipping so much they need someone, anyone, even as bad as Sarah Palin to garner viewers?  Are we to take this seriously?  Enquiring minds want to know…

Maybe you would like to leave your thoughts with Fox?  Here are some ways to get a hold of them.

  1. And yet, there’s a whole nation of people who see this woman as a leader whose time has yet to come. Mere days after the election I started seeing PALIN2010 bumper stickers. Great.
