I was attacked in Cancun by a security guard and left for dead. Within 12 hours of the attack, I was on a plane back to the USA for medical treatment. I gave police the name and location of my attacker, so did my niece. Also, the police got a statement from an eyewitness to the attack, who said I was NOT the first victim, only the first to go to the police. However, NO ONE has been arrested in my case, over 16 months later! I am currently working with the US Embassy and local officials in Cancun to have these men put into jail, but not much is being done...because, I am a woman and an American. It is a fact in Cancun and Acapulco alone 87% of all reported crime is not investigated and 93% of crimes go unpunished. This is NOT in the travel brochure! Why continue to be in denial about the terrible crime being committed there? Just refrain from going to Mexico, until they clean up their act. FACE REALITY!! As long as you don't wear a sign on your back announcing to the world that you are a rich American, you have very little to worry about. I ran across your blog looking up border situations and found it overly alarming. Mexico has serious issues along the borders, but the country over all is completely safe to travel in. Much of your fear seems completely unwarranted. And again, this is coming from someone who drives regularly in and out of Mexico.
